FORMODA by Marcy Grant

FORMODA is the name under which I create and comes from the principal of FORM + FASHION (moda)

FORM: "Form follows function", as the renowned architect Louis Sullivan has voiced as words of wisdom. Fashion must first function on a practical level. It then can be molded into individual inspired works. These works should suit the personalities and shapes of each person who wears a piece of jewelry or clothing. My work takes inspiration from natural elements. From a tree at a large scale to its leaves on a smaller scale--the form of the branches grow up and out to find more sunlight. The veins in each leaf radiate out from the stem to collect moisture. My work considers how a piece branches out or radiates to wrap around the wearer. My necklaces take care in how each connection reacts to the human form--its function to highlight and distinguish. My clothing follows a similar line of thought. The motifs on each piece are balanced to wrap around each person's form.

FASHION: Fashion is always in flux. I take careful effort to create pieces of wearable art that are edgy, timeless and uncommon. I'm constantly working towards new and unique ways of creating my work. My inspiration comes from organic and architectural forms, as well as color and pattern. Things found in nature are my constant encouragement to create new things. I like to use whichever materials inspire a particular design. My work often includes combinations of metal, gemstones, glass, paint or fabric. I'm also intrigued by the relationship to scale in a piece's components and using inventive color-material combinations.

ARTIST BACKGROUND: I began my fixation with design when I was very young. That passion motivated me to study graphic, industrial and jewelry design at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. With honed skills, enthusiasm and a move to Chicago in 1998, I began to focus on the design of wearable art. I relish the way a necklace can be worn as a funky sculpture, or a shirt as a type of painted canvas.

You will find that a design which speaks to you will reflect your inner artist. I hope you will find that connection and inspiration in Formoda. My work continues to blossom on a constant basis, so be sure to check often for fresh designs.

Marcy works out of her loft on Chicago Avenue and sells her work through shows, boutiques, by appointment, and through her web site, formoda.com.
